Books for Christmas

I'm not doing Mailbox Monday since I didn't actually get any books in the mail this week, but I did get these under the tree. For Christmas my DH got for me audio books!

And Another Thing. I loved the Hitchiker series by Douglas Adams so this was a must have for me. It promises to be just as funny. We shall see.

Unseen Academicals. Well, I've read many Terry Pratchett books and found them all highly entertaining. This is the newest and I wanted it. I expect to be highly entertained! It works out good since I joined the Terry Pratchett Reading Challenge and the Totally British Reading Challenge.

He also got some books for me, not on CD. They are:

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

Had to have it. I was going to go ahead and read it now but then I joined the Terry Pratchett Reading Challenge, so I'll just hold it over till next year!

Elvis and the Dearly Departed. This single book has several things I have a soft spot for: dogs, cozy mysteries, southern settings, & humor. With any luck I've found another series to read!

The Greatest Generation. I've been wanting this one for awhile so now I have it! Thanks DH.

Steampunk

I am reading Boneshaker which says on the front that it is Steampunk, a genre I hadn't heard of before. I had to look it up and this is what Wikipedia says:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments .... Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.

I found this interesting and will keep my eyes peeled for other odd genre or sub genre names. I'd like to hear if you have any in mind.

It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has discovered the belongings of japanese families who were sent to internment camps during World War II. After Keiko and her family were evacuated to the internment camps, she and Henry could only hope that their promise to each other would be kept. Now, forty years later, Henry explores the hotel's basement for the Okabe family's belongings and for a long-lost object whose value he cannot even gegin to measure. Saturday 9

Saturday 9 is hosted by Sam at Saturday 9. Welcome to Saturday: 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Don't Talk to Strangers
1. Tell us about a night that you spent with someone who was a stranger, yet by the end of the night you were very close. The only time I've ever spent the night with a stranger was back in college, the first night with a room mate in the dorm. We did become friends.
2. When is the last time you rode the bus?
Last year when I took my 2nd graders on a field trip.
3. Describe the last time you stood up for a cause.
Happy, fulfilled.
4. What is something you would like to do, but you're afraid of the risk(s)?
Buy a new house, but I'm too close to retirement.
5. What would you most like to accomplish before the year is over?
Not enough time to accomplish much.
6. Name something you'll miss about 2009.
Nothing that I can think of.
7. If you could invent something, what would it be?
Something to clean my house and keep it clean.
8. What first got you started blogging?
Finding someone to talk about books with.
9. How did you find this meme?

From The Book Depository:

Product Description:
In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. Thus was Dr. Blue’s Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue’s widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

From half.com:

Product Description: First in a new urban fantasy series-with a bite as magical as its bark. Mason used to be an enforcer, ensuring that suspect magic practitioners stayed in line. But now he scrapes out a living playing guitar. Good thing he has Louie, his magical...well, let's call him a dog. But there are some kinds of evil thateven Louie can't sniff out. And when Mason is attacked by a supernatural assailant, he'll have to fall back on the one skill he's mastered in music and magic-improvisation.

Mary Stewart

I read a lot of her books in the 60's and 70's and remember wanting to read more and more. I've seen her books popping up in the book blog blogosphere. Needless to say, I'm considering reading some of them again. The one I remember as liking the most is Airs Above the Ground.

Which Mary Stewart novel should you read?
Your Result: Airs Above the Ground

Lovely Vanessa March did not think it was strange for her husband to take a business trip to Stockholm. What was strange was the silence that followed. Then she caught a glimpse of him in a newsreel shot of a crowd near a mysterious circus fire in Vienna and knew it was more than strange. It was downright sinister.

Touch Not the Cat

Treasure Hunt

Last week J. Kaye had a question: "My question is what is up with paperback books costing over $10?" Her question made me think about my own purchasing of books. I pay less than cover price for most of the books I buy. I hunt around at used book stores, online sources, and sales for books.

The first thing I do is to search half.com for books I want. The used book sellers there will usually combine shipping. While there a couple of days ago I found the book
Dog Days by John Levitt and paid $5 for it. That includes shipping. At another provider at Half.Com I bought two paperbacks: Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs and Biting the Moon by Martha Grimes and it cost $8.38 inc. shipping.

Yesterday I hit a used bookstore I had some credit with. I used up all my credit and got three books for $3.63. They were:
1. Dogs Never Lie About Love by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson
2. City In The Sky by Max Brand
3. Destry Rides Again by Max Brand
I've recently had a surge of desire to read westerns. I haven't really read westerns in years. Recently a friend got me interested in Robert B. Parker's three westerns Appaloosa, Resolution and Brimstone. They were great. They put me in the mood for more westerns!

At the same store I found Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater for 8.99, half the cover price.

So basicaly I got 9 books this week for $41.33. These were all books I've been wanting, all books I'm able to get off my wish list! Well, the westerns were just a general desire and I will be getting more. That averages about $4.60 per book during this little splurge of book buying. I'm set for awhile!

It seems that my book buying has become a treasure hunt!

On My Wishlist

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme thought of by Book Chick City. It allows us to share the books we haven’t bought yet but are waiting to be bought and devoured. This meme gives us a chance to share authors/series we are looking forward to! Check out the ‘On My Wishlist’ post from Book City Chick here.

My wish list is huge. I intend to share only one or two books at a time. The first book I'm sharing is:

Don't you just love that cover? I had to find out what it was about when I saw this. Imagine my surprise when I found it was a zombie book! Here is a quote from the cover:

“A steampunk-zombie-airship adventure of rollicking pace and sweeping proportions, full of wonderfully gnarly details.” Scott Westerfeld

Gotta have it!

Sure Miss My Library!

Not very long ago the roof of our library caved in. Above is a picture from the Library's site that shows the fallen ceiling being propped up. The books have been removed now and are awaiting a new home. Rumor has it that the city is going to purchase the Mall in order to provide said new home. The library will go in one end where, many years ago, there was a small K-Mart store.

I really miss the library. It was small but wonderful. And it saved me a lot of money! :) I always watched for the new popular novels and I always had books on CD checked out. I've been buying used books on CD from our local used book store.

Suggestions from librarians there helped me find some of my favorite authors and series. I enjoyed talking to them and getting their views on books.

The children's librarian there is wonderful. She is very enthusiastic and energetic. She used to work at my school and did a great job engaging the children.

Palestine Public Library

What a sad turn of events! Our Public library, which was housed in an old school, has had to close due to structural failure of the building. The roof caved in! No one was hurt. At this time "Workmen have labored all week to stabilize the library to make it safe enough for librarians and volunteers to remove books from underneath the mangled mess that was the roof." I haven't read anything about our special collections but I hope hope that the books and papers there are all ok.

You can see a couple of pictures and read about it here.

I just ordered the Amazon Kindle 2! Actually my husband is getting it for me for my birthday. I am so excited. I even paid for one day shipping to get it here by my birthday.
Everyone that writes or blogs about it has liked it. I wish I knew someone around here who has one, but I don't.
If you have one please leave a comment about yours. How do you like it? Is it as easy to use as I've read? What accessories did you buy? What did you name your Kindle?

Challenges

Since I joined my first challenge last year I've read a greater variety of books, more classics, more genres. I remember toward the end of last year feeling trapped, so I held back on the number and type of challenges I joined this year. However just today I joined 3 more challenges. Two were mini challenges of only two books each the other was a commitment of 10 books from the Guardian's list of 1000 Novels Everyone Must Read Before They Die. That makes a total of 11 challenges. Two of them will be ongoing, Books Around the States and Books Around the World. My personal challenge, the 5x4 Challenge, includes 4 books in 5 areas that I don't normally choose books from. These of course will all go toward my goal of 100+ books this year. The rub is that I don't plan out my reading just buy or check out anything that catches my fancy. I figure I had better start planning if I want to get these all in. So.........

ON MY NIGHTSTAND FOR THE REST OF MARCH:

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Audiobook Challenge, 100+ Challenge, Library Challenge)
Tarzan and the Golden Lion (5x4 Challenge - Books older than me on my shelf, RYOB Challenge, 100+ Challenge)
Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Defoe Mini Challenge, Audiobook Challenge, 100+ Challenge, Library challenge)
Bleak House (5x5 Challenge - Classics, Guardians 1000 Novels Challenge, RYOB Challenge, 100+ challenge)
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid (5x5 Challenge-nonfiction, RYOB Challenge, Audiobook Challenge, 100+ Challenge)
